The Bahamas, officially known as the Commonwealth of the Bahamas, are a group of islands southeast of North America and northeast of Cuba. This independent country is around 1,400 square kilometers with a population of approximately 340,000. The population of the Bahamas is composed of a diverse mixture of the descendents of indigenous people from other islands, former African slaves, settlers from America and Britain, and a number of other countries around the world. There are approximately 700 islands in the Bahamas, but most of the population lives on thirty or so of the islands. The official language of the country is English, and the legal system in the Bahamas is very similar to Britain's legal system. Bahamas' political system was also modeled on that of Britain's. The elected prime minister is the head of the government and there is a bicameral parliament. The members of the House of Assembly are elected while the governor-general appoints the Senate members.

The island was first occupied by people from nearby islands in the Caribbean. At one time, pirates including the infamous Bluebeard, used the islands as a haven. Later, the nation was taken over and colonized by the British. The French, British, and Spanish all quarreled over the country at one point or another. American forces even invaded and captured parts of the country, including the capital Nassau, during the Revolutionary War. The Bahamas was gradually granted its freedom. It became self-governing in the late 1960's and was granted full independence by Britain in 1973. Even after it gained its independence, the Bahamas continued its membership in the Commonwealth of Nations, an intergovernmental organization, most of whose members were originally colonies under British rule.

The climate in the Bahamas ranges from subtropical to tropical. The country is in the hurricane zone, though, so it is a relatively common occurrence for the Bahamas to be struck by hurricanes. Despite this, the country is an extremely popular tourist spot with beautiful beaches, lush foliage, and other tropical sights. Nassau, the capital city of the Bahamas is located on New Providence, a busy tourist spot. Almost two-thirds of the population of the Bahamas live on New Providence, and the island is well-equipped to handle the high tourism traffic that it receives. The island has a deep-sea port and some of its many hotels provide gambling. Most of the tourists that visit the Bahamas come from the United States. Bahamas' exports include timber and salt, but the two biggest economic sectors in the Bahamas are tourism and offshore banking. The Bahamas has been a high-profile name in the world of offshore banking for over forty years.
