Belize is a small Central American country just south of Mexico that borders the Caribbean Sea. This country, formerly known as British Honduras, is about 22,800 square kilometers. The official language of Belize is English, although Spanish and a type of Creole widely spoken, making it the only Central American country whose official language is English. Belize's climate is tropical, and the temperature does not vary widely. The country has wet and dry seasons, although the impact of these seasons varies throughout the different regions of the country. Belize's population is approximately 320,000, making it a very lowly populated country. Belize City, the former capital of the country, is located on the coast and contains a deep-sea port and an international airport. Belmopan has been the capital of Belize since 1970.

Centuries ago, Belize was home to the Mayans. The Spanish tried to occupy the land but were driven away by the Mayans. The next to settle down there were English and Scottish pirates who used it as a safe haven. The Spanish let British settle the land in exchange for the United Kingdom dealing with the pirates. Although the Spanish had disputes over the land, the British claimed Belize as a colony and kept the land. The country began self-governing in 1964 and gained full independence in 1981. Like many of Britain's former colonies, Belize's political system is based on England's with an elected prime minister and a parliament. Even after its independence, Belize kept very close ties with England and is a member of the Commonwealth of Nations. Belize's legal system is based on England's Common Law. Throughout the years, Guatemala, Belize's neighbor, has tried to claim the country as its own. Belize remains adamantly an independent company under the protection of the British government.

A coastal country, one of Belize's biggest natural resources is fish. Belize also has many more exports including citrus fruits, bananas, clothing, and cane sugar, and many of its citizens are employed in agriculture or marketing. Oil was recently discovered in the country, but it is too early to tell the effect this will have on its economy. Tourism is an increasingly large part of Belize's economy. The country offers numerous activities and sights including Mayan ruins, the second longest coral reef in the world, tropical forests, beaches, and resorts. Because of its proximity to the United States, the majority of the tourists in Belize are American. With the International Business Act of 1990, Belize entered the offshore banking sector and quickly grew into a popular jurisdiction.
