The British Virgin Islands is a British territory comprised of about fifty islands in the Caribbean to the East of Puerto Rico. The population of the islands is approximately 22,000 in an area of 153 square kilometers. Most of the population, 18,000 people, live on the island Tortola, which contains the capital Road Town. As a territory of Britain, the official language of the Virgin Islands is English. The majority of the population is descendents of African and Caribbean slaves. British are also a large ethnic group, and there are other various European countries represented in the islands. The climate in the Virgin Islands is tropical and ranges between 21°C to 32°C. A Governor administrates the Virgin Islands for the Queen of England. The island does have a unicameral parliament called the Legislative Counsel.
The islands' first settlers were indigenous people from South America. Christopher Columbus sighted the islands in 1493 on his second voyage and named them. His name for them was later shortened to the Virgin Islands. The Spanish first claimed the islands, and over the years the French, English, Dutch, Spanish, and Danish all quarreled over them. The British finally gained control of some of the islands the Dutch held. Those islands are known as the British Virgin Islands while America purchased the other ones from the Dutch, and they became known as the American Virgin Islands. The British established sugar cane plantations on their islands, which were prosperous until various disasters, natural and otherwise, in the 1800's. The British Virgin Islands became autonomous in the 1960's.
The two biggest industries in the British Virgin Islands are tourism and financial services. Tourism brings in almost half the revenue for the territory. Over 350,000 Americans visit the islands every year, and there are thousands of more tourists from other countries around the world. The islands have coral reefs, sailboat tours, resorts, and almost anything else a tourist could want on vacation. The amount of offshore companies registered in the Virgin Islands is staggering. There are more than 550,000 offshore companies registered in the British Virgin Islands. Approximately half of the government's revenue comes from fees paid by offshore companies for financial services.
