Gibraltar is a British territory, which is self-governing. This territory is located on the Iberian Peninsula with Spain to the north. It overlooks the Gibraltar Strait, which separates Europe and Africa. Although small, less than seven square kilometers, this area has been historically vital in many battles. The official language of Gibraltar is English, although Spanish is also widely spoken. British pound sterling is the territory's official currency. The population of the territory is almost 29,000, most of who have emigrated from various European countries. The climate is subtropical, and the temperature usually ranges between 11°C and 21°C. The Queen of England is represented in Gibraltar by the Governor of the territory who is elected and serves for terms of four years. The Chief Minister, who is appointed by the Governor, is responsible for the daily administration of the territory. Gibraltar also has a unicameral parliament and several political parties.

The Moors who controlled that area for around 750 years built the first fortress on the Rock of Gibraltar centuries ago. The Spanish controlled Gibraltar for over a hundred years. After losing most of their fleet of ships to the British though, Spain was forced to give Gibraltar to Britain in the early 1700's. Britain built up a Royal Navy Base there, and the Rock of Gibraltar was valuable as a military base in World War II. Although Spain wants the region back, the people of Gibraltar have no wish to fall under Spanish rule. Great Britain has told Spain that they are going to honor the wishes of the people of Gibraltar.

The biggest economic industry in Gibraltar used to be jobs produced by the military base there. That has slowly changed though as the offshore finance sector and tourism now dominate the economy. The Rock of Gibraltar is a famous tourist spot due to its significance at different times throughout history. Many cruise ships stop at the port in Gibraltar for day expeditions and the opening of many high-end stores has made Gibraltar a popular and exclusive shopping spot. There are a number of resorts in Gibraltar, and its close proximity to Europe makes it a convenient vacation spot. In recent years, Gibraltar has become more involved in the offshore finance sector.
