The Bailiwick of Guernsey is a group of islands off the coast of Normandy, which is a British Crown Dependency. This means that while Guernsey governs itself, it is under the United Kingdom's authority and is not a sovereign nation. Guernsey is part of the grouping known as the Channel Islands. The total size of all the islands comprising the Bailiwick of Guernsey is only 78 square kilometers with a population of around 65,500 people. Most of the population is descended from people from the United Kingdom or other European countries. The capital of Guernsey is Saint Peter Port. The official languages are English and French, although regional languages including Guernésiais and Sercquiais are still used in some parts. Guernsey is a temperate climate with mild winters and cool summers.
The Islands were controlled by Brittany until the Duke of Normandy captured them. When a Duke of Normandy invaded and conquered England, the same person ruled England and Normandy. While England lost mainland Normandy to France through the years, they retained their hold on Guernsey. The islands were attacked and occupied by the French numerous times throughout history. Men from the island fought under England during World War I. The island was invaded during World War II and extensively fortified by the Germans. Many of the fortifications are still intact and some can be viewed by the public, although many are on private property.
Guernsey's States--a political assembly-- is called the Stated of Deliberation, and its members are elected by the people every four years. The British government is represented in Guernsey by the Lieutenant Governor. There are a number of ports and harbors in the islands and two paved airports. Various financial services account for almost one-third of Guernsey's income. Other sectors including horticulture, tourism, and manufacturing are declining in the islands.
