The Bailiwick of Jersey is located off the coast of France. This collection of islands is a Crown Dependency of Great Britain, which means that it is not a sovereign nation nor does it belong to the EU or the United Kingdom. Jersey is only 116 square kilometers with a population of approximately 91,600. The other islands in the bailiwick are almost uninhabited. The capital of Jersey is Saint Helier. The official languages of Jersey are English and French and some of the citizens speak a Norman language called Jèrriais. Although Jersey is under the government of Britain, it does have a legislature called the States of Jersey. Some members are appointed by the Crown while others are elected. The Queen's representation on the island is the Lieutenant Governor of Jersey, who is not very involved in the daily administration of the island. The legal system in Jersey is based on a mixture of Normandy statues and English law.
Evidence indicates that Jersey was settled as far back as the Bronze Age, and there is evidence of Roman visitation to the island. Jersey was controlled by Brittany centuries ago before it was taken over by Vikings in the ninth century. The island was added to the holdings of a Duke of Normandy. When one of Normandy's rulers conquered England, the same person governed both countries. Although England lost its mainland Normandy holdings, it retained Jersey. The island was occupied by Germany during World War II until the war ended.
Jersey's economy depends on agriculture, international financial services, and tourism. Some of Jersey's major products are tomatoes, potatoes, flowers, and dairy products from Jersey cows. Jersey cows, which have gained a worldwide reputation for their quality, bring in substantial income from exporting dairy products to the United Kingdom and other countries. An electronics industry is beginning to develop on the island. Despite the island's small size, hundreds of thousands of tourists visit Jersey each year. The business of offshore banking has burgeoned in Jersey.
