Nevis, a Caribbean island southeast of Puerto Rico and east of Central America, is part of the Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis. The island is about 93 square kilometers with a population of approximately 12,000. Nevis' official language is English and the population is a mixture of the descendents of slaves brought to the island to work the plantations, Europeans settlers, and a variety of other nationalities. A tropical island, there is little variation in the climate on Nevis, besides the rainy and dry season. The Federation of Saint Kitts and Nevis has a political structure based on Great Britain's, although there are some differences. Nevis, for instance has a unicameral legislation of its own. Nevis does have the right to secede from the Federation, and there is a movement in the island by certain bodies in favor of secession.
Amerindians were the first residents of this tiny island, which was spotted and named San Martin by Christopher Columbus. Through a mix-up, Columbus' name for the island became attached to a nearby island, so San Martin was renamed Nevis. Although Spain claimed the land, Britain eventually took it as one of its colonies and settled it. Nevis was a very important colony to the British. At one time, it even produced about one-fifth of the total sugar cane production of Britain's colonies, outranking larger islands including Jamaica. Nevis and two other islands, Saint Kitts and Anguilla, became an associated state in 1967. Anguilla seceded several years later, but Saint Kitts and Nevis remain connected.
After Nevis' sugar cane industry, the main source of income for the island, collapsed, the island went through a rough period of economic hardship. The biggest industry in Nevis today is tourism, with tens of thousands of tourists visiting the little island each year. There is an international airport on the island making it easy to reach, and despite the damage done to create sugar plantations, the island is a stunning place with beaches and coral reefs. Since recent legislation was passed, Nevis became a player in the world of offshore banking, with thousands of international banking companies registering at the island.
