The Republic of Seychelles is a nation made up of 115 islands in the Indian Ocean. Seychelles is off the east coast of Africa about 1,500 kilometers from the coast. It is northeast of the island Madagascar and located near other islands including Zanzibar. The total land mass of the islands is approximately 455 square kilometers. The capital city of Seychelles, Victoria, is on the island of Mahé, which is the largest island in the group at about one-third the size of the total land mass of the nation. Mahé is also the center of commerce in the nation and contains Seychelles' only international airport and deep-sea port. There are only about 80,000 inhabitants of Seychelles. There is no indigenous population of Seychelles. The diverse populations of the nation are the descendents of French and British settlers, and emigrants from Africa, India, China, and other parts of the East.
The islands were under the control of both the French and the English at different points in history. Seychelles gained independence from Britain in 1976 and has ruled itself for the past 33 years. Politically, the nation is an Independent Democracy with a president elected every five years and a parliament called the National Assembly. There are a number of political groups and a wide range of political views in Seychelles. In 1979, an adjustment to the nation's constitution turned Seychelles into a one-party government. The adjustment was not reversed until 1993, when the constitution was amended to allow a multi-party system again. The official languages of Seychelles are English, French, and Seychellois Creole. Since the area was under the control of the British and French for so long, Seychelles' legal system is based on English Common Law and French Civil Law.
Most of the income of this country comes from tourism, but the government of Seychelles is trying to expand into manufacturing, agriculture, and fishing. Some of the islands agricultural products are cinnamon, vanilla, bananas, and coconuts. Most of the fishing done is tuna fishing. Seychelles has stunning beaches, granite cliffs, and misty forests. Even at its coolest, the temperature of Seychelles rarely falls below 23°C and often reaches 31°C in the humid monsoon season. These incredible natural sights and the nation's climate make Seychelles an exclusive tourist spot worth visiting. Seychelles has carefully guarded its natural beauty, so it is a location of sustainable tourism rather than another once beautiful, ravished nation. The business of offshore financial services is also rapidly growing. The International Business Companies Act of 1994 governs the creation of incorporating a Seychelles IBC. The statutory requirements are rather lax and minimal, so it is simple for companies to setup offshore accounts.
